Women Are shown as two polar opposites in the media, either as an absolute angel, never doing anything wrong or as a they presented as the complete polar opposite, completely patronising them.
Women are often sexualised, having their assets being shown off.
Not only is there gender representation in the media for women, but there also is race and even hair colour. Quite often is a women has blonde hair would be put down for that and called a ''dumb blonde''

Anchorage:Words that go along with images to give meaning to them in a specific context; includes captions in newspapers and taglines on film posters.
Male and Female Spectacles in the media
Women and men are both given two very different perspectives in the media, specifically in the GQ magazine men tend to be given a position of power and status and presented as gentlemen, for example Leo DiCaprio in a suit with the Title ''King Leo''. On the other hand women are almost dehumanised, they're just shown for their looks and sexual attraction in the front of the magazine, for example Lana Del Ray on the front of the magazine showing off her assets and being sexualised.
What is the Van Zoonen Theory
Van Zoonen
believes the media portray images of stereotypical women and this behaviour
reinforces societal views. The media does this because they believe it reflects
dominant social values (what people believe in) and male producers are
influenced by this. This is a patriarchy (a society ran by men for men) which
dominates and oppresses women.

The Van Zoonen theory is represent in the Daily mail here in two completely different scenarios. On one hand there is a stereotypical women housewife, on the other hand the daily mail are presenting to be showing off her assets and are sexualising her.
In the newspaper in the left, the main image is the parent of a child is being once again represented as a stereotypical mother, in this case it being Kate Middleton. Furthermore this is belittled by the headline 'ONE GLASS OF JUICE A DAY RAISES RISK OF CANCER''. This belittles the image of Kate Middleton and the baby as the headline takes up a larger portion of the newspaper as oppose to a picture of her and the royal baby . The colours used in this issue of the mail is also typically feminine, purple being a feminine colour, which presents this to be a newspaper more aimed towards women and with it being purple it would attract female attention. The font used is serif and is used to show its clarity and is used for modernity, it also attracts newspaper viewers as it is in bold text and they can see it from a far and they would know what the newspaper headline is that they are about to pick up.
On the other hand, the daily mail once again appears to be showing women as non superior but in a different ways. In this case there is an image of a women showing off her assets, this shows the newspaper as informal as it is showing signs of nudity, this is known as the mode of address. Just above it there is an Add advertising a weight loss programme, this is in the mast head which contains a logo of the sun. This is the daily mail hinting at the audience that people should be skinny and that people should act on this. Furthermore on the weight loss advert it shows a women, the avert could have easily had a male on this but the fact that a women is being who'd on this quite obviously shows that that ad is in fact aimed at women, especially where there is a women who is already skinny herself. Furthermore these women are being Further belittled by the Headline, which says ''MINISTER SENT IS P.A. TO BUY SEX TOYS''. This headline has nothing to do what so ever with the images and advertisements on the front cover of the paper which indirectly shows that these women and advertisements may only be on there to attract people to pick up the newspaper and tempt people into buying it, furthermore the headline is in bald text to attract the readers attention and catch their eye if they were to see it in a public place. Below the headline there is the Stand first which also goes into detail about what the newspaper will contain in a short summary, in this case it goes into detail about the headline and summarises to the potential buyer about what may be inside the newspaper, there is also a copy which is essentially just the body text in which the stand first is contained. The colour behind this issue of the daily mail is also designed to be more aimed at women as it contains a lot of pink and stereotypical pink is a very feminine colour, this once again shows this newspaper is aimed at women , further showing that it is aimed at women and that women should be losing weight and tracking their fitness.
